openSUSE DVD/CD cover art: Opinions wanted!

openSUSE 11.2 is scheduled to be officially released in about a week (give or take a few hours...) and, as usual, we're gearing up to press a bunch of media for shows and the ambassadors.

Typically Novell has created the artwork for the openSUSE DVDs, but this time around we had some really interesting and creative input from openSUSE contributors.

Here are the choices -- vote in the poll box below or to the right!

openSUSE Art Proposal 1

#1: DVD Cover 1

openSUSE Art Proposal 2

#2: DVD Cover 2

openSUSE Art Proposal 3

#3: DVD Cover 3

So, which one would you choose? Yes, I have a favorite. No, I'm not telling. Yes, there's a ringer in the house...

Pick the openSUSE Cover

  • Cover #3 (40%, 1,923 Votes)
  • Cover #1 (36%, 1,746 Votes)
  • Cover #2 (24%, 1,137 Votes)

Other details on the openSUSE DVDs:

  • You asked for 64-bit, you've got it! We're creating dual-sided media for openSUSE so that we have 32-bit media on one side, 64-bit on the other. This will be especially handy for folks (like me) who have a smattering of 32-bit only hardware still laying around.
  • Live CDs: In the past, we've not created live CD media, but we wanted to provide some swag for GNOME and KDE specific events -- so, we're going to be creating a limited amount of live CDs that we will provide at events.

After the 11.2 release we'll provide details on how to get media for events and so on. Sorry, we're unable to handle individual orders for openSUSE DVDs. If you don't want to mess with downloading openSUSE for your personal use and don't need a full retail kit, I'd recommend checking out On-Disk.com or CheapBytes. Information on retail boxes will be forthcoming soon.

Update: Thanks for all the comments! Polling and comments are now closed. Winner will be announced shortly.

I like the little icons on #3, but it's over all a bit bland.

Sorry for double-posting, but seriously, how exciting is a picture of a blank CD on the cover of a CD?

    # 3.

Its the only one that doesn't look like a train wreck on the back cover. (Sorry, thats a bit harsh, but the backs of choices 1 and 2 have too much competing information)

I do like the logo/badges on 1 and 2 better than the blank disk of # 3
but I quess we are not doing a mix and match at this point. and nothing about #3 hurts my brain :-)

#3. I think it has the cleanest look, and the description on the back + screenshot is just the right balance.

#3! The other two are hideously bloated with nonsense slogans and useless distraction that only confuses people who don't know what it is.

I noticed that in cover #1, where it says about processors, it says "...Opteron od newer". Is that a typo?

Overall 3 is most professional and seems to fit with new splash screens and theming in 11.2 (whilst #2 looks like theme in 11.1). However, looking at #3 at a size on screen almost equivalent to a real disc case, some of the smallest text looks very difficult to read. #1 and #2 fail for me on the phrase "What's openSUSE?" which is too colloquial for my liking, but I also don't like #3's statement of "make your desktop.... up and running". 'Get' would make more sense instead of 'Make'. I assume F-Spot wouldn't be the featured screenshot on the KDE Live CD versions?

I'd like to vote, too, but every time I try to send a vote, it tells me to use a valid vote? WTF?

I'm using Opensuse 11.0 KDE3, and have tried with Konqueror and Firefox

    I prefer, BTW, no 2

3 is great but it wont turn heads

why? 2 is moderner than 3 . 3 is very simple

#2 is my choice. I dislike dark themes.

  39. Posted 11/6/2009 at 2:20 AM | Permalink

I have voted for #3, but it's hard to choose.
#2 - remind me about the old SuSE distributions
#1 - the front size is nice, but the back one is , how to say, artificial or plastic (not natural) (no je prostě děsně vyumělkovaný)
#3 - it's clear and nice, but the color is too dark.

The best combination is the design of the third one and the color palette of the first one.

Cover 1 has more life in it and looks a bit more creative than the others to me. I hope that it will win.
Cover 3 is not bad but the colour is a bit too dull.

    #3
it has opensuse 11.2 design style
    #2
is good but it is little bit many objects... (but it really good as far as #3 )
the problem with #2 background is great, i like this colours that cooperats each other unlike backround on back side of screenshot...and it definitly not from 11.2 style. (maby BG and colour combination that will be great for whole 11.3 system)
also the main rectangle(on the face side, where is opensuse logo) is a little irrational. it starts and ends with no sence at all. and a face side is complitly bad as for my point of view...
#1 is completely bad from mainly 2 points.
first - there is combination of 2 styles. SLED 11(flying stripes) + opensuse 11.1(upper bar)
second - there is very hard contrast author is concentrate at fields where system requirements.
and this fields is very bad looking because of this... then take all attention at them and completely cover main reason about what dvd is.
please do not take a vote seriously... make professionally look at them an you'll see that I am right..
and you has no another choice then #3
