Avoid Fifth Third Bank at all costs…

Without going into a great deal of detail, let me just say that if you’re looking for a bank for a checking or savings account, or if you have a choice of banks for an auto loan or other type of loan avoid Fifth Third Bank if at all humanly possible.

Long story short: I’ve been fighting with Fifth Third Bank for a couple of months now about providing proof of insurance for my car between October and December of 2007. (Fifth Third has the loan on my car.)

In December of 2007, they sent me a letter saying that they had no proof of insurance (I’ve had State Farm since 1989, without a lapse in coverage since) and would be billing me retroactively for coverage during that period until I provide proof of insurance. They sent this to the wrong address because they failed to update my address after I went to a local branch of the bank and gave a teller the new information along with a payment.

Now, how it’s legal for a company to retroactively bill for insurance coverage, I have no idea — since I can obviously make no use of insurance for a period of time that has passed — but they’ve either claimed they did not receive proof of insurance from State Farm or refused to accept the form of proof from State Farm several times now. I’ve spent well over five hours of my time calling Fifth Third about this problem and have also no doubt wasted quite a lot of my insurance agent’s time.

With any luck, it will be resolved soon — but I will be looking to pay this loan off early or find another lender to allow me to get away from Fifth Third and warn as many people as possible to avoid doing any business with this bank.

What galls me most of all is that the bank acknowledges they’ve spoken to State Farm and have been told that, yes, I do and have had coverage — but they refuse to accept that as confirmation. They also accept no blame for failing to update my address, and no shame whatsoever about trying to charge me for insurance during a period of time that has already passed and can be of no use whatsoever except as a penalty for not assisting the bank with their shoddy recordkeeping.

If it’s any consolation (and probably not much), I’ve been hatin’ on Fifth Third for going on five years now. Abysmal customer service and absolutely no accountability. Sorry they’ve been teh suck for you too.

I have never been treated so unhumain by any bank as I have with Fifth Third bank.

I had a minor overdaft and tried to resolve it quickly but they frefused to give me any gace. They allowed it continue to draw overdraft fees up to three hundred dollars. All over what they consider their timing in realtion to a twenty dollar overdraft that I made a deposit to cover. They however, posted my charges before the deposit allowing this to ring up many dollars in overdraft. When trying to resolve the problem, they were not understandable in anyway, in fact, did everything they could to get more money.

I have had accounts with several other banks and they have never treated me with such disrespect.

I would highly suggest to investigate other banks before ever getting involved with fifth third.

I believe they should shut this bank down. After reading about all the headaches they have caused numerous people, I would like to add my two cents. I have an equity line of credit. (Hopefully, not for much longer) Wachovia did a three-way call with them and sent them a statement to prove they deducted money from my account in the amount of $375 .83. Here we are 19 days later, and they are still harrassing me with nasty phone calls. This transaction was done over the phone and I was given a Confirmation Number. They can’t trace it in their records, even though they have proof from Wachovia. Now, it is almost time to make another payment. I am pulling my hair out. How can bank personnel be so irresponsible?

Fifth Third Bank is not a financial institution that you should do business with.
We had a car loan through them… what a complete five year nightmare. Ignorant customer service backed by incompetent record keeping and fraudulant charges.
DO NOT USE FIFTH THIRD BANK for any banking or financing transactions.
In fact they should change their name to FIFTH TURD BANK.

I have had nothing but problems 5th 3rd bank. They are the only credit card company that will not allow you to pay your bill over the phone the day it is due without charging a late fee. I moved 9 months ago and each month, I wrote my new address on the statement. They failed to update my address and when I didn’t receive a bill this month and didn’t pay it on time, I got a late fee depsite their negligence. My credit card with this company has been cancelled and as soon as it is paid in full in the next few months, I will never deal with this crappy company again.

Come on guys… I have worked in the financial industry for many years, was working the day the feds closed our doors in 1986 (Lyons Savings) during the largest gov bialout ever!!! But, many banks have similar policies, they deduct debits from an account before adding a deposit – even on the SAME day!!! By law, they have the right. I am not saying this is fair, but ALL consumers should do their homework BEFORE they open an account or loan at ANY Bank. By the way, while you may not agree with any of this, their stock is a great value and as a growing bank, a STEAL!!! Maybe you can recoup your losses by being a stock holder and letting them know with your VOTE!!!

I’m in the same boat! Although mine involves an auto title that I have been waiting on for THREE MONTHS!!! I paid off the loan in full back in May and now here it is August and I am still fighting to get the stupid piece of paper to something that I have already sold! The latest excuse is that they sent it to the wrong address, the one that I changed 4 years ago, and I have repeatedly confirmed the new address evertime I call them which is daily now. I just want the title so I can be done with them and never ever go back!

I am currently looking to get away from Fifth Third. I have an auto loan with them and they have delayed posting my payment up to 15 days and now they want to send me to collections. I make my payments on time. But here’s the kicker. In April my auto was hailed on. Small dents (which most have popped out). My American Family adjuster warned me when I said I didn’t want to fix it, I would just put the money towards my loan. His words exactly – “Fifth Third Bank is known for making your life miserable if you don’t get it fixed.” Guess what, now I’m getting screwed.
    DO NOT BANK WITH THEM.

I agree..Fifth Third Bank is an unethical and immoral bank trying to tout its products as being consumer friendly but they are actually out to get fees. I got 6 overdrafts because the put my deposit last and then paid the largest check first. They even gave me an overdraft fee for money that I got out early in the morning via ATM machine when the money was available!!! I am going to another bank because they are truly out of touch with people

I just spent four hours trying to straighten out the flood ins coverage. Three fax’s have been sent from june and july, fourth fax was sent from the BOca Raton branch directed to Joyce’s attention and her fax number. Guess what I received a letter and a new coupon book adding $1400. to my mortgage payments!!!!! The branch rep called the ins div and was able to straighten this out up to 6/08 but said I will be charge for the previous months since the effective listed is 6/08. The condo ins is the same as when I took out the mortgage in 07. If fifth/third thinks I’m going to pay . I intend to send a complaint to BBB and the Florida Insurance Div. If I can swing it I will look around for another bank one that doesn’t rip off people !!!!!!!!!

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER, under penalty of death, deal with this bank. Although the people that i have dealt with at my branch have all been polite and courteous with me (note I said at my branch, not at any other branch I’ve dealt with), I cannot help but stand alongside many others in this posting and claim similar nightmares. I just deposited a $500 check yesterday, to cover going under $34 Monday(multiple minor transactions) which resulted in $296 (awesome!) of overdraft fees yesterday. Which do you think they posted first yesterday, my check (I deposited before 11am) or the overdraft fees (which, when I asked today, don’t get posted until sometime after 2pm?). DING DING DING! That’s the sound of more money for the bank! So even though I deposited my check yesterday morning, a whole new cycle of overdraft fees got priority to attack the account first, before my hero check could fight the first horde of the dark overdraft army!

And those of you posting about how wonderful this bank is, how this bank saved Timmy from the well, how if it wasn’t for this bank you would be face down in a gutter somewhere, go post on the “5/3-paid-me-to-type-this-suck-up post page” b/c you obviously did not read the title of this one, nor adhere to it: “Avoid 5/3 bank at all costs”. The kicker of it all is that I’m more mad at myself for having gotten sucked into this mafia-like bank in the first place than I am at the bank itself. Actually, no, I’m definitely madder at the bank.

Unfortunately, I got involved with 5/3 several years ago, but not by choice. When they took over Old Kent Bank, my 2nd mortgage loan was taken over, too. Due to a job loss, I got behind on my payments. I contacted customer service and got the run around for a few months. I tried to do a short sale but they would not agree to it even though my 1st mortage holder would! I tried to refi this loan along with my 1st mortgage but couldn’t because my house wasn’t worth enough to do that. And had something worked out with my 1st mortgage just to refi that and get the payments lowered until 5/3 would not agree to stay 2nd on the loan. Apparently, they don’t want to make it easier for me to pay them their money! So I tried everything to try to work something out and just when I thought I had, they sued me! They filed the lawsuit as a complaint on promissory note instead of a foreclosure. I hired an attorney but he said there was nothing I could do. They got a judgment against me, so now I am still in the house but I have a $30,000 judgment hanging over my head and I’m living in a house that is not worth what I owe on it! 5/3 asked for $350 a month payments and said they would not enforce the judgment as long as I pay on time. Big deal! My original payments were $357 a month. What makes then so sure I can afford $350? So now I am paying my 1st mortgage plus $350 a month to them which was what I couldn’t pay in the first place. Needless to say, my personal economy is down the tubes. I don’t know when I’ll ever catch up with everything! And with this mortgage crisis, no way will I be able to get a refi now, even if they did agree to it!

Banks are federally regulated. They can’t just make up their own rules. all banks have the same policy about posting credits and debits. Its not like there is some evil troll sitting behind a desk laughing while intentionally posting your debits before your credits. If you have a problem, just talk to someone. No reason to storm in there all ticked off. I’m a real person w/ problems of my own, when someone comes to me w/ an issue, I try to help them. I also explain our banks policy (which is like all other banks) so they can bank responsibly. I work at a super small community bank and we have the same policy. Do your homework before freaking out because you wrote a bad check.

I received a Pre-Approved Mastercard from CLC Platinum (Subsidiary of Fifth Third Bank) back in April 2008. Upon receiving cash advances, it took almost two (2) weeks for the fees for cash advances to post, resulting in my account exceeding the limit. Resulting in over the limit fees. Also, even though my payments were sent well before the due date, I ended up with late fees and over limit fees for two (2) billing cycles. Then to top it off, last month I ended up sending in two (2) Money Orders at the same time Priority mail. They arrived the same time, yet ended up posting on two (2) different days, seven (7) days later. Then all of a sudden after they post the payments, my available credit disappeared not allowing me to access my available limit. Today, September 20, 2008, I accessed my account online and there is a “We regret to inform you that through no fault of your own CLC Platinum has decided to terminate ALL MASTERCARD ACCOUNTS.” However, even though they posted this months payment(s) late, they graciously forgot to charge me a late fee. (Gee thanks). I would strongly consider accepting any type of financial activity from Fifth Third Bank or their subsidiaries!

I’ve banked with Fifth Third for well over 25 years and have never had any major difficulties.
They have been pretty stable unlike many of the “here today gone tomorrow” banks. I think every company experiences glitches now and then whether it’s with computers or due to human error.

I want to see how those that know banking law defend this one. My denit card number was hacked and used through a temporary PayPal account. I discovered it the day after it happened and immediately contacted PayPal. I claim was filed with their fradu department and the money was back in my account the next day. It was a substantial amount but since it was back in the account, I paid some bills. I thought all was well. A week later the same amount had been deducted from my account. I called Fifth Third and was told that they had to do an investigation and when they do that, the amount in question is pulled from the account. Of course, this made the checks I had wrriten bounce and now they are assessing fees right and left. They tell me they have a right to do this while an investigation is ongoing. The money was not theirs to begin with, so I cant understand what gives them the right to take it out of the account. To make it worse, the fees that have been deducted were so great, that when my wife’s direct deposit hit last night, it still left us with a negative balance. The fees ate up her check! They say they will refund these after the investigation, but that does not help me now, it just allows them to charge more fees. I would love to know how many regulators sit on their board of directors.

I’ve been with Fifth Third for two years now and just pulled all of my savings and canceled my checking. Worst bank I’ve ever dealt with, and I thought Chase was a bad bank! They admitted they processed things incorrectly but said there was nothing they could do to correct the situation, so I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and cut off all of my ties with them – I’m sorry for the individuals dealing with loans at this institution, they aren’t in the business of providing customer service.

Been banking with 53 for 7 years, do not work for them, have had my problems with them (like the $2 “foreign withdrawal” fee every time I use a non 53 atm). Twice in that time we have had overdrafts because of mistakes WE made, and both times they waved all the fees after we talked with them. So, what I am wondering is are all these people just paying the fees and bitching, or are they trying to resolve them? Oh, and talking and bitching are mutually exclusive when trying to work out a problem ;-)

In 2002, I took out a 7% 30 year home mortgage from Fifth Third.

In 2003, I refinanced to a 15 year 5% mortgage. Yes, they charged for the refinance. Understanding that they are in the business of making money for themselves, not being your friend, this makes sense.

What I found less acceptable was their repeated offers over the following years to give a new 30 year (or 15 year) mortgage whose rates varied from 6.5 to 7%. Again, I understand that they are not your friend, but what was despicable was the marketing that accompanied the offers.

The offers offered to ’save’ [sic] you money by having a lower payment [plus a refinancing fees] over a much longer repayment period. [Is this similar to equity stripping?] Although tempted to forward thess offers to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for action, I merely just threw them away. [I suspected that the Ohio Attorney General's must have been aware of the practice, plus Fifth Third probably had solicited political backers to keep operating the way it did.] Even back in 2005 I thought if they were having folks fall for these scams, then the Real Estate, and banking industry, in Ohio was headed for a fall.

We all now know that the Real Estate market has faltered in Ohio, and now, as of Sept 29, 2008, it looks like Fifth Third might fall to.

If it does, it, the institution, those responsible for its predictament, and those that profited its practices, have little sympathy from me.

I’ve been in the finance industry for quite some time. And what I’ve discovered through personal experience is that 99% of the morons out there that either live pay check to pay check or can’t balance a check book to save their life, or can’t have the common sense to “try” and remember what they spend on their debt cards so that their accounts don’t go negative are the same idiots that have nothing better to do but complain to the world about their pathetic discrepancies.

If you people took a chance to try and balance your account and actually have money in it, you wouldn’t worry about bouncing a check or over drafting. If you took a minute to think that maybe, just maybe you’re spending more money than you actually have rather than buying that $5 latte at starbucks that you don’t need or wasting money on that special something that you just have to have or your world will come to a crashing end then you wouldn’t lose a good nights sleep. And you wouldn’t be typing your meaningless complaints for others to laugh at.

I’m not rich but I know how to balance my own accounts, hence I’ve never had a bank issue in that regard. Sure I’ve had small issues here and there whether it was a credit card, or car loan or mortgage or insurance but who hasn’t? It’s life people, deal with it. And if you had half a brain cell you’d google the other banks out there and see the same mindless people like yourselves having the SAME rinky dink problems with ALL the other banks and NOT just 5/3. No bank is perfect and no matter who you talk to they’ll all have complaints about every bank in existence.

Try not to pound sand like a 5 year old the next time you have a problem whether it’s with a bank or anything else for that matter. Your small problems can be fixed and with a calm attitude you can fix the majority of them yourself. Take a breath and realize there’s more important things in this world to worry about. Go hug a loved one and buy a puppy if it’ll make you feel better.

If reading this has made you angry, then there’s no hope for you and chances are you will live life a miserable person rather than strive for the joy that it offers. If you actually understand and can relate, then you’re a better person than you realize and should pat yourself on the back.

I agree, the worst bank I have ever dealt with for a mortgage loan. When our monthly payment increased it took us nearly 5 months to learn that 5/3 unilaterally increased the mortagage insurance without advising us. When we questioned the reasoning, no plausible explanation was forthcoming. Fortunately we were in a position to sell the home and excape their exhorbitant lending policies which to most would border on usury.

Ten days after the “hurricane” I stopped at my local Fifth/Third branch to pay the annual fee on my home equity line of credit (bill received by mail at my address) and discuss activating some funds to pay for the damage to my property. They took the money….applied it to my equity line….and then told me the line had been blocked since April. No reason given. The block was about 30 days after paying $350 to institute the line of credit on my new home. (Yes we paid for the home appraisal too). Thus far I have paid $420 to Fifth Third for a “service” that doesn’t exist . It is now October and I have yet to receive an explanation or a refund…even on the payment I had made in person five minutes before they denied me access.

If Fifth Turd bank is so freaking wonderful why is this site loaded with unhappy customers (present and past) AND this isn’t the only site that has unhappy Fifth Turd bank customers airing their problems with them. THANK GOD my bank accounts are with First National Bank St. Louis – I’ve been with them 10 years and never had a problem with accounts and loans. I lease a car from a dealership (the dealership used them for financing I didn’t pick them) and had problems with Fifth Turd Bank from one year into the lease forword.. the car is gone, the lease is gone and so are they! I still say to anyone that asks don’t use FIFTH TURD BANK.. may they go belly up. As for you know-it-all snobs I couldn’t refinance the freaking lease without paying fees ($2000 worth).

fith third failed to deposit a 900.00 check into my account in 2003, causing me to have returned checks. 8 in all. I did get 7 sent back through and covered, however a walmart check for 98.00 was not caught, due to my moving and not getting notice on time. I ended up 2 years later doing 8 days in jail for theft and now after continuing to fight it out, still have a theft on record that I just found out about and will have to hire a lawyer to have it espouged. So I strongly agree with, “Do not use this banks services’.

Fifth third bank is not a good business entity, this bank is there only to take advantage of the struggling consumer.
I am a home owner for 8 years now, crown Bank had my mortgage and sold their business to Fifth third bank without formally informing me, while I was on military assignment. I was entitled to 6% reduction in my payments according to law, due to my deployment. Crown bank was awarding me that, but when fifth third bank took over ( they have yet to tell me when they took over my mortgage) they did not grant me my 6% decrease, but rather increase my mortgage payments, and although I do I have a fixed interest rate, my mortgage continues to increase. I can not get any answers from them as to why the increase.
I also want to find out, if I did get my 6% reduction from fifth third bank, during my military deployment period. Somebody from fifth third bank needs to give me an answer.

I just had to add my 2 cents after reading all these. I am surprised that so any people are so angry at this lending institution. I read some valid claims and some silly ones. Some people are obviously not able to deal with the consequences of their own actions. REMEMBER, just like any business, banks are set up to be profitable too. Would you open a business and run at a loss? If you answered yes then you are an idiot and should never run a business. PEOPLE please as one of the writers wrote…PLS DO NOT SPEND MONEY YOU DONT HAVE. I think that is simple enough. If you are receving calls or emails with offers you don’t want…simply go to or call a bank location and ask that they put yu on the no call and no ,ail list. Now remember that that also excludes you from the good stuff such as discounts for you and your family on certain bank products and services. THERE IS NO PERFECT BANK…Im sure you can the same kinds of comments about other banks too. Anyway, thats all for now folks.

I also have an auto loan through 5/3 and started receiving numerous calls (13) that came up unknown or unavailable. Finally, I was left a voicemail with a code to retrieve a message stating my car payment was late. I checked my account online and the last payment I made in person at the branch was put in incorrectly by a bank rep. The first teleservice rep hung up on me. The second gave me a telephone number that was not in service… I heard people in the background laughing which should have been a sign. The third acknowledged it was a bank error but insisted that I had to pay the “delinquent” amount tomorrow or it would be reported to the credit bureaus but I could “fight it.” She said she would transfer my call but told me to call the customer service number back and tell them what happened!!! She transferred my call… to the main menu. The fourth transferred me to a gentleman. We could barely hear one another, most likely because the service rep conferenced the call and remained on the line. He stated the late fee would be “waived” due to the bank error and gave me a reference number and to allow 10 business days. He was annoyed that I kept asking him to repeat the number because I could barely hear him. Funny none of the other reps had any difficulty hearing me. I just dreaded the idea of calling back a FIFTH time.

I have been fighting this nasty dishonest “Bank” for going on nine years.

They “Lost” a $1600.00 deposit then charged me $980.00 worth of overdraft fees for the privilege! After confronting them with proof, original deposit slip and canceled check with “Fifth third for deposit only stamped on the back!” they never did fix it. Sold off the fake debt to the worst debt collector in the country who hounded me for years and put a lien on my home!

As a customer you have no way to fix mistakes made by their overworked, underpaid staff.

I’ve had my problems with 5/3 and the only one I was not able to resolve is when they more than doubled the cost of my safety deposit box. Nothing the manager could do, the new rates were set by corporate. Everything else was calmly discussed and almost always resolved in my favor. A clue for all of you if you want good service with any bank. Get out of the car, stand in line and meet the tellers. Introduce yourself to the branch manager. Over the years I’ve learned the names of several of the tellers and always say hello – with a smile. I now know my branch manager – because I bothered to. These are simply people that work at a bank. If you are a faceless name on an numbered account why do you expect any better service than a faceless numbered account? For Pete’s sake, these folks are holding YOUR money – build a relationship before there are any issues.

    Dear Truth Hurts and KT:

Please note that I have lived up to my obligations to Fifth Third and it has lived up to its obligations to me. [If it fails, I'll continue making payments to whoever buy/inherits the note]. I live well within my means. I did not respond to their repeated offers to help me take money out of my house. Generally, I don’t like debt (low fixed rate interest debt used for necessities or a non-speculative business purpose perhaps is OK, so long as you understand and accept the risks that go along with it).

What I found dismaying was Fifth Third’s, what I regard as deceptive, repeated offers to ’save’ me money by giving me a vastly extended repayment schedule, at a higher rate of interest plus refinaning fees. [I also never fell for the repeated offers to 'make my house work for me'].

[To analogize this to Yogi Bear and Jellystone Park]

OK, I might be ‘Smarter than the Average Bear’ and did not fall for its offers, but I don’t think Fifth Third should have engaged in the marketing it did.

It was deceptive, and it was wrong. I suspect that many other people did fall for Fifth Third’s siren calls.

Ranger Smith would have never done such a thing as Fifth Third did.

And any reasonable, responsible, and caring (if even only to itself and its hopes of repayment on a consistent basis) respectable institution would never have done so.

Fifth Third and those who permitted and profited from it practices should pay the price for its failure if it does, in fact fail.

Yes, I am concerned that those who caused the damage have already, or will shortly sell their interests leaving unsuspecting ‘innocents’ to pick up the bill.

  51. Gee, Truth Hurts and KT.

How do you suppose that SO many people have had problems with this bank? You, quite narcissistically, assert careless behavior because people are living “paycheck to paycheck”. The collusion of the obduracy you have assumed for the purposes of your argument is simply astounding. The fact that you have constructed an ad hominem to suit the purposes of your argument, by implying that people are only angry because they’re negligent, is as offensive as it is officious.

So far as I knew, when my account was hit, twice, for insufficient funds, my account was in balance. I knew my account was in balance because Five Turds’ website indicated a positive number in my ‘Available Balance’ on my electronic statement. They let me use my debit card against that ‘Available Balance’, then charged my account because the check amount that created my ‘Available Balance’ “had not cleared, yet.”

In spite of having an ‘Available Balance’, Five Turds’ continued to assess overdraft fees on my account. How do you suppose so many people have had this adverse experience with Five Turds? I’ve had other bank accounts and the problems reported by so many people on the internet relating to people who bank with them never happened to me when I was banking with other banks.

Your obstinate public relations pap is clearly what Five Turds wants people to believe in order justify its practices. It is the rationalization of your company’s narrative that almost paints it as the victim of the people who it has pissed off. If you want a hard lesson in marketing, Google your bank’s name. On the internet is a litany of people who you have pissed off; of bloggers who have recognized problems with your business practices; and of people who are circulating the bad word of mouth at the speed of light.

In short, your bank, come hell or high-water, is f**ked to its eyeballs in bad publicity. Yours, and other banks like yours, have created a market in high interest, payday loans that people adopt to mitigate the damage done to their accounts. Your blind love of money is a malignant stain on the economy that ensures we live in a society in which it is fashionable to f**k over anybody. If you want an ad hominem, I’ll give you one: You’re a feckless, carping premunitive yeast infection that functions on a societal level. The bottom line is that if it wasn’t profitable to overdraft my account, Five Turds would put measures in place to ensure that it doesn’t happen.

as an ex employee of this bank I can tell you they rip thier customers off on a daily basis with overdraft fees. They put what they call a matrix on your account so it allows you to spend more than you have in your account they do this so they can charge you overdraft fees. They do not care about thier employees and could care less about keeping them happy. I had a firing queen come inot the branch I worked and fired 3 people for no reason she said they didn’t have to have one. When I called the human resources dept. they had no explaination. this bank sucks and I would never recommend anyone to bank there let alone work there. Worst experince of my life.

Wow, I never expected to read this many problems with 5/3. I am one of the ones who hasn’t had problems and I’ve had my Checking account for at least 8 years, the Credit Card for about 5-6.

I’ve had comapnies overdraft my account with unauthorized charges and I’ve had my Credit Card number stolen due to me actually being tricked once by fake Paypal. Now I should mention, I always go to my local bank to resolve problems. I hate phone and/or email with ANY company, cause it is never handled the same, in person is the only way to go. The first time I ended up with the overdraft was years ago, before this new, nicer system they have now. I sat down with the bank manager and showed him what I had, proving it was an unautorized charge that overdrafted my account and he agreed to reverse all the overdraft which had gotten upto around $200.

The second time was just last month, I went to the bank again, showed them the email stating the money would be returned, they filled out the dispute thing and two weeks later the money was back and all the overdrafts were gone.

Oh and another time, I overdrafted my account and didn’t get the money in until after hours. I went back the next day and told them, just to make sure everything was good and it hadn’t posted yet. So I had more overdraft but they cleared it up also, since I had made the deposit the day before. They didn’t have to do that since I was late getting it in, but they did.

A bank I can’t stand however is Bank One aka Chase, I used to have theirs before 5/3 and 5/3 was a huge step up for me. Like I said, I am surpised at all the trouble people have had and that really sucks. It sounds like alot of you handle it over phone and email, which in my book is bad news with almost any company. By the way, I’m in Ohio, not sure if location has anything to do with it. I’ve found some comapanies like that, you deal with one loaction and it is horrible, then another and it is great. Sadly it all depends on the kind of people working there. But I have no complaints about the people working at the 5 different branches I’ve been too in Ohio.

Anyways, just my experience, I’m not saying you should stay with them if you’ve had all kinds of problems. I’ve heard the same things about my car insurance, Progressive. My uncle had all kinds of problems with them, whereas I never have.

I may regret saying this. I have had my car loan with 5th 3rd for a little over 2 yrs. I haven’t had any problems, except the timing on posting my payments. Any other loan, credit cards, whatever, I can send in a check and it will usually post within 4 days from date it was mailed. But with 5th 3rd it is usually 10-15 days before it posts and last month it didn’t post until after the day it was due and they charged me an $18.00 late fee. I’m sorry so many people are having trouble with them and pray that mine never escalate to that.

  57. I just refinanced my home mortgage in to Fifth Third bank. Closing with them was a nightmare – they were wavy on their word, and it was a real fight to get them to follow through with what they originally committed. I’d almost given up home completely and let the whole deal go under.

Now, every payment we have sent them (the last two) have ended up being late. I can’t stand it. Our last payment we sent on the 7th, and they didn’t “receive” it until the 24th (it was late after the 15th). This is balogne because we our previous lender was in Florida, and it took 3 days to receive the payment!

They billed us the late fee anyways. The customer service was not very helpful. We’re sending certified mail from now on.

I too have had problems with 5/3 on an auto account. They’ve consistently mis-reported my account status for nearly two years. After several credit report agency disputes, a Better Business Bureau dispute, a complaint via the Attorney Generals office and the Department of Commerce, I finally got them to admit that the credit report is incorrect – but apparently they’ve decided it’s not their responsibility to correct it.
Sooooo……now they have been served papers to appear in federal court to explain their violation of the Federal Credit Reporting Act……along with a statement that the case is non-negotiable and there will be no out of court settlement, they must explain their actions in a court of law.

I’m rather looking forward to that day !

These people need to shut down and until that day happens (as I’m sure it will) they need all the exposure possible for their corrupt mentality.

We have our mortgage with Fifth Third… Not only did our construction loan get messed up, but as the loan converted, they screwed up our escrow. Three months later, countless phone calls and they still just don’t get it. I’ve had our county auditor & treasurer’s office call them. They are still trying to make us pay taxes for the year our home WASN’T even built. I keep getting a run around, keep getting told we are reviewing it. This month is the first month they want the escrow payments made. We are making DOUBLE escrow payments and of course if I don’t pay the payment today it will hit our credit. I’m tired of this bank and their ignorance. As I told the one customer service rep, aren’t they supposed to be the smarter of the two parties involved here when it comes to a mortgage? I’m sick of it and oh let’s not forget that they’ve lost our insurance certificate THREE times now even after talking to our agent. If you have the option, run and run fast right away from this bank. We are located in Ohio.

As an employee of 5/3, I can sympathize with many of you on here. I can also agree that you shouldn’t spend money that you dont have and if you aren’t responsible enough to keep track and balance your checking account dont have one. I dont have any of my personal accounts with 5/3, but I do know that many other banks have similar debit and credit processing. Typically, no matter where you bank, the largest item comes out before the smallest.

The people who you see at the window are just like you! We overdraw our accounts and chances are….. you are making more money than we are.

and… the “matrix” that was mentioned earlier can be removed from an account at your request. Just remember to not come in b*&hing at me when your check to walmart gets returned and you then have to deal with taking care of it.

Reluctantly, I took out a mortgage with 53rd because their rate was well over 1% less than any competitor on a fixed rate, 30 year term. The first 6 months I never recieved a statement, they couldn’t get my online account working, and I was only allowed to work with the incompetent banker who did my mortgage. ONE YEAR LATER I find out that the way my mortgage was processed, I was incurring over-drafts. Instead of my payment being applied, then interest, they did it reverse, effectively going over my account balance, adding up the over-draft charges, etc. It took a full year to actually get a statement. All I knew is that money was being withdrawn from my account and they were working on getting me statements. It took them an additional 6 months to correct the error, yet my Credit Rating took a hit of over 100 points and they’re unwilling to do anything to resolve it and explain it was their error.
I bank with a different bank, have my mortgage with 54rd. I went to 53rd to do a wire transfer out of extra cash I had in the account. I wanted to wire the money into my investment account. Simple process right? Well, its nearly 24 hours later and they’re still trying to figure out how to do a wire transfer. They said the charge is $25; my nifty online account states the charge is $40. I asked for a full refund of the wire charge because I wanted the money in the account this morning. They can’t refund the charge because it requires their incompetent manager to approve it, but he’s at a different bank branch trying to learn how to do the wire transfer to my investment account.
I will not touch 53rd again after this. I originally had problems with them 11 years ago in banking, avoided them for 8 years until I reluctantly took my mortgage.

This is Liz again number 45.
Okay things could not get worse right? Wrong! I decide to pay my car payment in person on 10/20/08 and ask to sign up to have the payment automatically taken out of my checking account for November, which I am told will occur in 4-6 weeks and to pay the bill until I receive notification. Eight days later without any notification they deduct the payment for October, which I paid just 8 days prior. This overdrafted my account. Well, when your account is overdrafted a 5/3 bank rep calls you to notify you. On 10/30/08 I received a voicemail on my cell phone from a woman named Andrea stating she was from 5/3 and asked “at my earliest convenience, if I could please call her at an unknown number, she was clearly laughing throughout the message and I couldn’t really make out the last number… so I searched every possibility and they all came up as unpublished cell phone numbers. This did not match the number she called from which actually came up as the 5/3 location! This unsettles me and pisses me off so that Saturday I go to the bank. There are 2 tellers working, one has a tag with Andrea on it!!! I have never dealt with her at all; I look at the other teller and ask to speak to the bank manager. He is like 10 feet away and she calls him on the phone, he motions for me to come over. I ask him why one of his reps would leave me a harassing voicemail and give him the details on my account that was overdrafted by their bank and printouts of all the reverse phone lookup searches. He verifies that that is indeed the 5/3 location’s telephone number. He asks to hear the message so I play it… on speakerphone. He gets up and walks toward Andrea and then comes back and states he will reverse all charges and investigate the voicemail, but would like to hear the recording once more, just not on speakerphone this time. I tell him to be sure not to touch any buttons. We’re done, right? No! As soon as they reverse the erroneous payment deduction and fee they deduct the payment once more, except that when I went in on Saturday I left only enough cash to cover the reversal because I wanted to place my money in a different bank ASAP so the account overdrafts again with $133.00 in fees this time. I go back into the bank and have another sit down with the bank manager and he states he will reverse all fees and it should not happen again. I reply with an, “it certainly won’t because as soon as this clears I am closing my account!” Then I ask about the voicemail. He apologizes and states the number was an ex-employees cell phone number! In fairness, the bank manager was alright, I wished him good luck, he’ll need it if he sticks at 5/3. I no longer have an account at 5/3 and my tax refund will pay off the car loan balance!

Thankfully it did not put me in the negative cause im sure they would charge me overdraft and still not call me! DO NOT BANK WITH THEM!

I’ve had some miserable experiences with Fifth Third also. Back when cancelled checks were returned to the customer, they mailed my cancelled checks to my employer instead of to me, they have neglected to post deposits that I have made through the Jenie machine, and I now have a home equity loan with them and if I happen to send a payment in early, they post it as an “extra” payment and then on my regular payment date I accrue late fees….go figure.

Whenever I’ve tried to resolve something through customer service it’s an absolute nightmare, however, I will say that I’ve had some success when I’ve gone directly to the branch and discussed a problem with a manager. (It took me awhile to learn this, though.) I will NEVER call their customer service line again, I’d rather chew my arm off than talk to one of those people. I honestly don’t think they really understand banking. It seems like they are just programmed to tell you that there is nothing they can do to resolve your issues.

GET AWAY FROM FIFTH THIRD*** They took over my bank that I had been with for 6 years. I never had any problems. Now for the 2nd month straight they have held my direct deposit for 2 business days longer than they should. Deposits were made on Fridays and Fifth Third has held them until the following Tuesday before they credited them. Then they posted all my checks first largest to smallest which I know is legal but they have cost me a total of close to $700.00 over draft fees. Now I took CASH to the bank on Friday. They bounced a check that was written Friday after the CASH deposit was made and they are trying to tell me that only the first 60.00 was available the other was pending. HOW CAN CASH BE PENDING???WHY DID IT NOT POST ON FRIDAY??? THEY can not answer that. I hope Fifth third fails and all the __$$## CEO’s wind up on the street homeless!!!!

Fifth Third is the worst lender I have ever dealt with. I have two loans with them because I am an idiot and did not research who I was lending through.

My first problem was with insurance coverage. They sent me a letter stating I needed to send in proof of insurance. I thought this was weird because I had this loan with them for 7 months and this was all taken care of when I first purchased the vehicle. I immediately sent them a copy of my insurance documents. Several weeks go by and I received another letter telling me that they are billing me $1,400 for six months of insurance coverage. I call and after talking to several incompetent people I get a supervisor. She proceeds to tell me that my insurance expired. They have access to the auto insurance records. At this time she realizes that I do have insurance and is sooo sorry for the mistake. I asked about the documentation that I sent and they claimed it most of got lost in the mail.

I sent a check for one of my payments and I noticed after several weeks it still hadn’t cleared. This is not unusual for them since it usually takes 10-12 days for the checks to post. After 13 days I decided to call to make sure they received the payment. They claimed to have never received the payment and once again it most of got lost in the mail. I told them I sent a check and was willing to pay once I contacted my bank and stopped payment on the check. There was no way I was going to let them collect twice from me. I called my bank and they were nice enough to stop payment for free. I called 5/3 back and asked about getting the late fee waived. They of course claim they can not do it even though I have been with them for two years with two loans and have never been late on a single payment. The late fee is $15. I ask how I can make the payment and she said western union, over the phone, or online. Well I don’t bank with them so I can’t do online and I am not sending a money order. I asked to do it over the phone. She then proceeds to tell me that it cost $17. I asked her why would I pay that when you are already charging me a late fee. I might as well make it even later and save the $17. Too make matters worst my bank sends me a letter that said the idiots tried cashing that so called check they never received. I sent this check 12 days before the payment was due so I am wondering where it was sitting this entire time.

I am a senior agent at 5th Third. I do not do anything for deposits. However, I handle EVERYTHING in lending. With car loans: We send 3 letters to the address on file requesting proof of insurance before forceplacing it. It takes up to 30 days to resolve it and the customer is required to pay the higher amount, per the contract, until this is done. We allow them to ignore 3 letters, so they must allow us thirty days to resolve it. Also for insurance if you are in an accident and your insurance does not pay the balance you ARE required to pay off your debt. FYI Gap insurance is not REQUIRED to pay anything. This can unfortunately result in a monthly payment even when you have a new vehicle. For titles, if we never received a title, we cannot create one out of thin air. You will receive a lien release that you can take into your DMV or BMV and get a title. *This is why they have title paper on rollers when you go in*. In mortgages: Even if your interest rate is fixed this does not protect you from yearly payment increases. Every bank collects a “cushion” to account for tax or insurace increases or a change in billing. You will almost indefinitely have a shortage if you live in Florida, Illinois, Indiana or Michigan. A shortage happens when the bank has to pay out money on your behalf. You can aviod this by not having your taxes and insurance escrowed. To do this your LTV (loan to value) must be less than 80%. If your mortage is with 5th Third fax in a written request and it will be done within 5 business days. NEVER LEASE A VEHICLE FROM ANYWHERE UNLESS YOU ARE 90 AND PLANNING ON KEEPING THE CAR IN A GARAGE. For address changes, do not submit the change of address on the back of statements. For whatever reason it does not go through the computer properly. Just call customer service, they can change you information and mail you a confirmation letter showing the update. Without being hasty I must just say “CAVEAT EMPTOR”- let the buyer beware. Read your cantract and your account agreements. Do not sign something if you do not agree to it. 99% of these “bogus” fees that you all are complaining about are in your original agreement that YOU signed. Whether you read it or not signing it states that you understand and agree to the terms. Do not call us threatening to sue. The contract is binding. If you ever need a copy just call us and we can have one mailed to you. Oh and the other big one: Do not call and ask for your payoff and then argue with us about not negotiating it. Life does not work like that. All the time I have customers say, “ABC Bank negotiates payoffs”. Is ABC bank still in business? Probably not. We have been a secure bank for 150 years and we are not going anywhere.

Too bad I fell for 5th 3rd’s Mortgage refinance scheme last week. If you’re out of state, like IL, DO NOT bother to refi with their Cincinnati office over the phone. Over the phone, the salesman wouldn’t give the total closing estimates..big secret. I call back after not hearing from him, find that he supposedly locked me in at the good rate(assuming it’s 0 points)…still won’t discuss estimates and will send the package via DHL. I’m bad…charged $200 for app fee. Now I get the package and find closing costs with huge points and junk fees.

What scares me now is that 5th3rd will give me a discount point if I let them take payment automatically from my checking acct (at another bank). I’ve read the horror stories about the overdrafts and inability of cust service to help. I don’t need this, so I’ll lose $200. Thanks everyone for your advice.

I am happy you also posted this!!! I have a mortage also with 5/3 bank. They gave me “force placed” insurance on my house. The whole time while i had insurance with Grange insurance. The insurance costed me well over $3,000.00 for the 1 and a half years of coverage they “foceplaced” on me. They failed to enter the information in the computer system after my agent sent him letters and faxes! He even sent them a certafied letter!! It took me almost 6 months and the threat of lawsuits and a local t.v news station showing up to there bank offices in downtown toledo for them to give me MY hard earned money Back! AVOID THESE PEOPLE!! They are scammers!

I Have a loan for 3 vans at this bank. Our bookeeper sends all payments 10 days before its past due. I am pretty sure they get it in time, but the problem is, somebody at their bank doesnt process the psyments in time and this bank is annoying with their nasty phone calls, even after our checks have been cashed in. I understand this could happen one time, but happens everytime regardles how much early we send payment. What is even worse, they have those automated computers talkin to you thru the phone, and they never call on normal working days or hours. SIMPLY, UNPROFESSIONAL AND ANNOYING LOAN SHARKS. I HOPE THEY BURN DOWN IN HELL.

CALL YOUR STATES ATTORNEY GENERAL IMMEDIATELY!! This institution needs to be held accountable! If enough complaints are filed, they may be forced to clean up their act. Also, contact the Better Business Bureau. I don’t have enough time to tell you all they’ve done to us over the past 2 years of doing business with them. Mainly, they extremely overpraised the value of real estate to give us a construction loan. We are currently working with the State attorney. Stay away from 5/3 at all cost.

OMG, I haven’t had a checking account for a while but got sick of doing everything by cash and money orders, I too once had a slight over draft: One time in like 6 months and they let it snow ball into over 400 dollars I had 3 transcations that were under one dollar that cost me 37.00 a piece, I went in there crying not even offered a tissue mind you, they made me feel like white trash , I am very hard working never bounced a check they took none of that into account and on top of it everytime I call there always always rude, I think once I’ve gotten someone nice, my branch manager in Holland Michigan is the meanest person I have ever met, even the other employess agreee I’ve said stuff and they nodded there head, she is so rude for no reason at all, I can’t wait to change banks, why are they so mean there? And why don’t we all switch banks at the same day? I’ve never ever heard anything good about them and I hate them, I have to call everyday first thing in the morning to check my checkbook against there word!!,,,They don’t care anything about there customers,

Never ever, i’d rather live in a hut then go throught them! p.s. changing banks this week, and am telling everyone my story and I have a lot of friends

I agree you need to understand fees and not live beyond your means or spend money before you have it.

With that said 5th 3rd is still ripping people off who are hardworking never had a late fee or an overdraft fee in thier life.

We have a mtg with them now. It was fine thru the construction phase. However when it converted to the perm loan I have had nothing but problems. Trying to get them to fix escrow issues and figuring out which of 3 payments books contains the right payment for them. My husband & I deceid to get away from them and are refing with Chase. We received the payoff amount and they want us to pay them $1800 for escrow/impound reqired. I call and they say this is due to the tax they are esitmating. I say not a problem the tax bill has been sent and it is only $406.48 and I have spoken to the county and that is all they are charging.

I offer to send them the info via e-mail because I don’t have a fax because I am home with my sick child. But I get the no we won’t change it there is nothing you can do about it.

I can’t beleive it. I have proof of what tax is due but they want us to pay them $1800 more than the 398 I have in our escrow account for the tax.

I asked to speek to a supervisor who stated the samething then after I keep going over and over the actual bill vs the escrow estimate and the fact that I have requested a review in October that maybe something can be done but I need to fax it to them or mail it to them to correct the payoff.

I am at home with a sick child and can’t but I offer to send them it via e-mail I offer to conference call with the county tax depatment so he can verify what I am saying. He refesuse to even try. He was saying things to get me to shut up. Customer service was not his focas. If it was he would try and met me 1/2 way just like I try and meet them half way by reseraching things and having all of the facts for them and not expecting them to beleive me and me offering to send them via e-mail or providing them with the auditors phone and web address so that they can verify everything.

I fianly hung up so mad. I never once used a bad word I did not treat them badly but I did want a little effort. I called a local branch and I am now waiting on a call from the brach manager.

So now I am waiting for a bank manager to call me back so that I can get this fixed. But after reading this it sounds like we will have to pay them $1800 for an escrow that won’t need it and wait for 4 weeks for them to then refund the money. Thank god that we have that money but what about folks who don’t.

We will see if they call back and reslove this. But I think this needs to be reported to the BBB and the Ohio Banking commission for unfair practices.

I have had problems with 5/3 with my daughter’s credit card. She has two credit cards with 5/3. She also has a checking account with them. When she went online and asked for her checking acct stmt to be an online stmt, it also (unaware to us) changed her credit card stmts to be online as well. We have been trying to clear it up for months now–trying to get the credit card stmts mailed to us, so that we could make the pymts. Well during this time we missed making a pymt, because I didn’t know when the pymts were due (my daughter is away at college). Our being late caused a late payment fee. The late pymt fee cause her to be over her credit limit, so she was hit with an over the credit limit fee. The over the credit limt fee hit on 10/28 (of course we are still unaware because no stmts have been sent to me). On 11/4 another over the credit limit fee was assessed because they said it was the beginning of a new cycle and the over the limit situation had not been cleared up. So here we sit now with almost $120 if fees for the same transaction. Of course, they will not reverse any of the fees because they said that they were rightfully due. Fine, I told them I would pay the balance off immediately–which is what I did. I will never charge anything else on this account. It’s only being left open to build up my daughters credit score. Since this time, they have only started mailing one of the two credit card stmts.

The mortgage officer (ALI SAAD), the processor, the underwriter, even the secreteray at their Dearborn Michigan branch have absolutely nothing to do with banking and loans. Please post a reply for the full story, these individuals can put you through the worst nightmare trying to get a mortgage loan. Fifth Third management: Dont even waste your time hoping for a bright future since you have managed to hire such characters.

Carrollwood Branch in Tampa, FL has the worst manager!! She was very condescending and rude. 1st time I dealt with her was when she waived overdraft fees from my account that technically never was overdrawn and then responded, “I will NEVER remove another fee for you again.” And she was serious, even though her employees made a mistake and told me there was not going to be a hold on my deposit. The 2 employees, also at the Carrollwood Branch, were wrong or lied and now I have to pay for their mistake. Thank goodness my friend was with me so I have an additional person to help spread the word about the problems with 5/3!!!! Oh, they get more pathetic. When I called the bank, the representative who made the deposit for me told me that he wasn’t wrong because technically there was no hold on my deposit, the check was just floating for a day (haa haa) and it is all my fault and that is why no fees can be waived. And to top it off, the deposit was excess funds from my student loan, which is from 5/3’s

This is the first time dealing wth fifth third and its one big headache! I have always payed my payments on time or within the grace period yet i have been charged with late fees three times. Not too mention numerous annoying phone calls before the grace period is up. Ive asked them to stop because they always receive their payments and that they are welcome to call if my payment is actually late, but they said they won’t stop and they are just courtesy calls, ha more like hasseling! One time i did a pay by phone two days after my payment due date and not only did they fail to tell me of the ridiculous processing fee they also told me they were doing the wire transfer of my payment amount of 320.75 and then 2 days later they did a post dated transfer for a late fee which over drew my account because i wasn’t aware they were going to do this. I also had to deal wth them when i hit a deer. My car could’ve been fixed and back to me wthin 2 wks but instead it took 5 weeks because fifth third bank had failed to update my address and phone info when i called them well before the accident. i sent them stuff from the body shop and insurance. all they needed was a simple signature on something. i was wondering what was taking so long and i called they told me what they needed but that they werent able to mail it to me or reach me by phone cause they had a bad address or phone number. What? i updated my info and can’t they look @ returned addresses or information on the checks i give them duh or get a hold of the body shop? instead they waited for me to become impatient after paying for a rental for 2 weeks! I too can’t wait to have this loan paid off but it seems like it will take forever wth the ridiculous interest! Aye Aye Aye

DO NOT USE!!! They are the rudest and least helpful bunch of people!!! I have been trying to get a refund for over $400 of overdraft fees that they charged my account when my account was NEVER overdrawn!!!! All they keep telling me is there wasn’t a bank error. But when you look at my statement it shows NO negative amount!!! They talk in circles and no one will stop reading from a script and actually look into the problem. Then not to mention the rudeness and unprofessionalism I have dealt with from MANAGERS!!! One in particular, Ann Gogatz, she was so rude to me I had to remind her that I was the customer and she was not going to yell at me especially when I am 5 1/2 months pregnant – How dare her!!!! I opened my account when the bank was First Charter and never had a problem, no since 5/3 has bought them out I have received nothing but problems. In my opinion, there are too many other banks out there then mess around with one that conducts its business like Fifth Third. I plan on closing all my accounts with them as well as my friends and family. I suggest if you have an account with them, you do the same!

I and all my family members have had several accounts with 5/3 for many years. I learned that there are some very helpful people and then some very rude and unprofessional people, depending on the branch. In general, my experience with 5/3 has been acceptable as long as there is no problems. If there is a problem, it seems to be location rather than corporate as to whether 5/3 will be helpful and professional. I wish all my good experiences at 5/3 were more the “ususal” experience at any branch.
Why we don’t shop for other banks? It seems that now is not the time for stability in any bank system and our experience with other banks have been as bad or worse. I just don’t trust banks anymore. I imagine 5/3 is no worse than most.

Not only is this company an awful place to bank but it’s literally the most abusive company I have ever worked for. Even in a down economy, I’d rather starve than set foot another day at Fifth Third Bank. I spent 4 years too many watching employees come and go, papers get lost and fees getting worse. Stay far, far away from Fifth Third Bank.

I had to do this twice as the main office claimed they never received it from the branch. Apparently the left hand doesn’t talk to the right hand. The girls in the branch office were very nice to work with but the main office is a joke. After other eventS, in which it cost me dearly, I cancelled all accounts and changed banks.

I will never ever deal with this bank again even if someone paid me to deal with them!!!

We have had a car load with 5/3 bank. Starting out with them, I would mail in my payments because they didn’t take any online payments. I mailed my payment in a week before the due date but some of the payments took longer than the 7 days to process resulting in a late fee.

During the first year we moved and I had sent in the address change that your receive in your loan book. I received a confirmation letter verifying the change of address.

Then about a year into the loan we received a letter from a collection agency regarding a late payment on the account from several months earlier. We were told that they send out several notices regrding this to us, just to find out that they sent it to the old address. After endless nights of talking with supervisors, having 3 way conversations with my bank and faxing in proof to them, they finally found that the payment was received and placed on another customer account. They said that they would take care of this with the collection agency fix my account and even take care of the other late fee from taking so long to process. They also double checked our address and made sure that it was correct.

Then a few years later we changed our insurance company. A few months after changing I started receiving phone calls from 5/3 telling me that I had paid my account late. I told her that was inpossible because I had my web banking set up to automatically pay 5/3 the same time every month and it would electronically get sent to the. After further investigation they didn’t get my new insurance information from my insurance ageny so they raised my monthly payment to cover insurance costs. Of course I never received any information regarding this. They said they sent me several notices in the mail on this. I asked again what address they sent it to and of course it was to our old address. Meanwhile earlier that same day I received a letter from 5/3 telling me about their home equity loans that they offer. We talked with their insurance department and they showed that they did have our new insurance information and that they would take care of the charges.

Now we are coming to the end of the loan. We made the second to last payment and called to see what the last payment would be and make sure that this nightmare would finally be done. Low and behold the payment would be almost double because of late fees that have been put on the account. We talked with a supervisor regarding this who was very rude and would not let us talk to her boss. Her response was that we had to deal with her and no one else. It would take her several days to read though all of our customer notes to get this straightened out and would call us back in 4 days. So now I get to sit and wait to hear what she has to say. My next step to to the attorney general regarding them. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a bank. I just can’t wait to see how long it takes to get our title. I wonder what address that will get sent to…..

Excellent friendly service is all I have ever experienced. Sounds like to me that lots of the problems some are having is trying to cover overdraws at last minute. It makes sence that transactions would be posted at the time of day and on the date they are done.

  109. Worst bank !!!

Lousiest bank to deal with… I bank with a lot of banks; Chase, Natiional city, Charterone and Fifth third to name a few. I have gotten excellent customer services from all of them except Fifth Third. At Fifth Third, I get charged fees to make night drops. I get charged when they count the money dropped in the previous night. I get charged if I have deposits more than $25K in a month (ridiculous bank with ridiculous charges). On top of that pretty much everytime my drops are counted bad. They always call me saying they are missing $20 or $25 from a drop. I have repeatedly asked them to have cameras where their employees count cash. But no use, they keep saying this even when I have upto three employees counting cash at my end before turning cash to them – By the way I bank with Fishers, Indiana branch of Fifth Third. The bank manager – John and his deputy KK are the most unfriendly people to deal with. Even when I have such huge sums of cash deposited in this bank, they treat me like dirt. They always give me an impression that they are too busy with other stuff than dealing with me. I have come to a point that now, I will discontinue banking with them and move over to another bank – most probably Nat City. A couple of years ago, I was acquiring a business, the local Fifth Third business banker was behind me to get my business, he insisted that I get external evaluators to evaluate the business potential and that would be accepted by Fifth Third. I spent $3000 to get the perspective business evaluated – in the end they did not give me the loan; inspite of excellent credit history. They said someone in Cincinnati did not approve. To me that is complete BS, I eventually got loan from another good bank but I lost the $3000 that Fifth third made me spend and did not cover. Lousy bank, if there is a journalist or someone wanting to do an article on this bank, I am willing to give my testimony so people can know what kind of idiotic bank this is. Also this banks offices are always in the most effluent areas, prime real estate – all at the depositors expense. Hope some one in the Federal goverment reads this and investigate their spending….

I have recently bought my first car, and my auto loan is from this bank. The interest rate they gave me will have me paying almost $10,000 more on a car that was originally $10,500.
So far, I haven’t had any customer service problems, but I am trying to pay this loan off within the year to save myself from these interest rates.
Did anyone have any problems trying to refinance with another bank?

I’ve been with 5/3 for over three years. While I rarely had a problem that they should have been held responsible for, I still had two negative experiences. The first concerned an offer that THEY made to me to refinance an HE loan at a lower rate–the loan was with another bank. I had ro submit the “required” paperwork 3-times: twice in person and one sent electronically. Even though I was a regular customer in good standing, already HAD an approved loan somewhere else, and a high credit score on top of it all, they still denied the application. Why? They could not prove income. MY PAYCHECK IS DIRECT DEPOSITED TO 5/3!! Not to mention that they did get a pay stub and a W-2 with the paperwork. Incredible! The second incident concerned an overdraft on my checking account; the check was posted one day ahead of the written date on two checks ($400+ total), and went into overdraft (+fees). There is only a 3-day “grace” period, so I am screwed. The funny thing is that I was sure that I had transferred money to the account to cover the charges in the event that this might happen, but I can’t find any evidence that I did it. After reading all of the posts here, I don’t expect to get anything reversed in either case, so it’s off to the “shopping mall” of banks and transfer my money elsewhere. Does anyone have any good suggestions??

Wow, I really am surprised at all the negative comments made on Fifth Third?? I read where one check was actually posted 2 days before the date on it!! Don’t you understand, it’s “upon presentation” that a bank pays and just because you thought you could get a couple days as in “the check is in the mail”, they will not hold it ’til you decide to put money in to cover it! DUH!

I am not with a bank and pity the people that have to put up with all your ignorance. The economy sucks and you are looking for a punching bag……time to look at all the good things in life and start counting your blessings, instead of complaining about everything.

Fifth Third is the ____. I run a business that ranges in the six figures. I had one customer’s check bounce (a large sum) which called me to bounce some. I called the bank and the people who I bounced the checks. I paid back all the people and Fifth turd charged me $750 in bounce check charges. I made everything right with everyone I wrote checks to ie: covered any of thier bounce check charges etc. I closed my account and told them to sue me for the money for the bounce check charges. This happen six years ago and they won’t sue me but have black listed me from opening any other accounts in most banks.

This post is not intended to offend anyone….

I found this post checking Fith Thirds stock ratings for the day. Not doing very well
at the moment. I guess that $480,000,000 award to the owner wasn’t such a good idea, LOL. Anyway………

In regards to those who have been charged late fees and such…

I have been with Fifth Third for close to 25 years. I was late on my credit card payment by one day because I forgot to go online and pay it. I called them and they waived the fee because I NEVER missed a payment before. No Problems at all. I was however, several months later, late again because I was out of town and forgot to make my payment once again. This time they told me they can’t waive a fee twice within a 6 month period. I said “OK, no problem, thank you anyway, I understand”

Old Kent Bank was my original bank until Fifth Third acquired them. I know a lot of people do live week to week. I did at one point in my life also. But, this is the 21st century people.

I keep enough money in my checking account to cover 2 months worth of bills AND I PAY ALL of my payments ONLINE!
My auto loans are automatically deducted from my checking account via Ford Credit. No worries….. no hassles.

Fifth Third is like all banks, for that matter, like all businesses….. Their purpose is to MAKE MONEY, period…… Again, the same as any business. So, for those who do live week to week, watch your finances CLOSELY! For those who have enough money in their accounts to cover their bills for a few months, welcome to the 21 century and try online banking…… It makes paying bills so simple.

Create a spread sheet of your creditors and keep track of your balances and payments. When you pay online you get a payment reference #. If you have any disputes, which I have never had paying online, you have proof of payments made.

The 21 century isn’t doing very well at the moment, but get used to it and embrace it….. It isn’t going away any time soon……….

I am not pleased with the customer service I received when I was trying to resolve a matter. Mrs. Long at the bank on Albemarle Road in Charlotte, North Carolina was very rude. The mail system losed the mail that had my sons’ room and board money inside of it. I had a cashier’s check in the amount close to 3.000.00. I went to her about the matter at 4:00pm. Although I had been there twice to see if the cashier’s check had been cashed previously. The teller’s were very helpful. Mrs. Long snatched her phone receiver and squeezed it as she had to call headquarters I guess to find out the procedures for reimbursing a lost cashier’s check. I could tell she was angry the way she squeezed and snatched the phone handle. I was trying to read the fine print and she was asking me to sign while I was trying to read. She was not polite to the customer at all. What really bothers me about the whole situation is that they do not reimburse for a lost cashier’s check. I had to call an insurance company to pay for a bond, stop payment and to be able to be reimbursed. I also bank with State Employees Credit Union. I called them there immediately to see what their procedures are for lost cashier’s checks and I was told that you are immediately reimbursed as long as you have your receipt. I have all my receipts for all the transactions. Therefore being a member at Fifth/Third is not beneficial at all. They are not customer friendly.

In the hope of finding a silver-lining in this global economic meltdown, I have been investigating mortgage refinancing options. My research, and an unsolicited call from Fifth-Third, who my wife has done business with, led me to enter into negotiations with this BUNK hoping to take advantage of their to-good-to-be true offer. After three weeks of dealing with 5th /3rd loan officer Jacqueline via email and phone I have come to the conclusion that they do in fact suck 5/3rd’s of the time. Each of Jacqueline’s requests for financial records has resulted in further requests resulting in still further requests. I have sent copious volumes of financial data to Jacqueline via email in PDF format. She informed me that she is not familiar with PDF files, can not open them, and the data needed to be sent via fax. Queries as to why she needed more data when she could not access the files she already had were blamed on requests from the Underwriters; who, based on the specifics of their requests, were obviously able to access the PDF “Portable Document Format” files. Pointing out this inconsistency led to the verbal final straw as Jackie baby laid down the law stating, “If you want to do business with this institution you will comply”. I said no thanks, and requested she email me the name and number of her supervisor, which she agreed to do. I am still waiting.

Apparently we cannot stand up to 5th/3rd’s meticulous vetting process and must continue our search for refinancing. Nonetheless, given the tenor in 90 percent of the previous posts, I somehow feel blessed; unless of course 5th turd bunk has replaced their sanctioned and defunct student loan division with a new identity theft division with Jackie in charge. The thing that still pisses me of is that Jackie and her cronies were clearly not interested in getting to know anything about us other than what they could glean from our financial records. My wife and I both have credit scores in the 790’s, have incomes in the low six-figures; our debt, other than mortgage, is less than 20 percent of our annual income, and about eight percent of gross income goes to our mortgage. My wife has had a thriving medical practice for the past 20 years and I am a tenured professor at a major public University and hold a PhD in economics. Our careers and future earnings are almost as secure as the career of a rude incompetent loan officer at 5th/3rd , apparently the only type that last. One might think a bank would want to have our business, but that does not seem to be the case. Perhaps to realize the silver-lining it will be necessary to take documents in hand and fax them to who knows where; or alternately just default on our current mortgage and we would probably be showered with loan offers. I have never been late with a mortgage payment, and haven’t bounced a check in 30 years, but it sounds like that might have come to an end if 5th/3rd representatives had not been so unbelievably nasty.

As to ‘Surge’s previous comments about airheads, he may want to take note of the whistling between his ears and retake Banking 101 where I am sure the basic concepts of Financial SERVICES are covered.

Update on 5/3 Bank. I have been in business for around 40 years. I have never seen such blatant stealing perpetrated by a bank before this month, either in Europe or the USA. Stealing – by generating fictitious situations so that they can create overdraft fees. Of course, bank employees would express the opposite point of view probably because they are ignorant of the behind the scenes changes. Realize that when 5/3 writes their own laws, they hide the delays in processing funds into client accounts, generate resultant overdraft fees and are accountable to no-one. What a wonderful American institution – see the resemblance to the snake oil salesmen of yesteryear?

My company has closed its account, will never again deal with clients who use 5/3 checks in payment and suggest small businesses walk away from this bank. The most obvious conclusion from my very recent dealings and the many other negative postings about this bank, together with the appalling stock price, is that they are going under and are scrabbling for as much short term operating cash as they can get.

I read through all of these comments posted on this site and have a few of my own to add. I work for a financial institution (not 5/3) and have to say that their “rules” concerning overdraft fees and business accounts are similar to those at other banks. Our bank charges $39 for each overdraft. Seems that you’ll save 2 bucks at 5/3. I would suggest that before you run into the bank claiming and accusing them of “stealing” your money that you take a look at the register that you don’t write in and grab the statement that you don’t balance. Here are some of my favorite questions from customers. “Can you please tell me the dollar amount of check number (blah blah) is? I forgot to write the dollar amount in my book and the check hasn’t cleared yet.” HELLO??? Do you think that I have a crystal ball? How am I supposed to know the dollar amounts of checks that you write…or better yet…when those checks are going to clear?? Favorite question #2… “What is the balance in my account? (insert current balance) Then…are you ready??? “does that balance include the checks that I mailed today??” ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? It’s no wonder that so many people have issues with their accounts and want to blame the banks. BTW, all banks charge non bank ATM fees (unless they are in a premier program). Bank employees are people too and face similar problems that customers do. We overdraw our accounts, we make late payments. BUT, as customers, it is our job to follow up and make sure that the problem is resolved to our satisfaction, whether the problem is with a bank, auto dealership, or insurance agency. In general, it seems that customer service has deteriorated significantly across all lines of business, not just banking. Ever try to return a burger made incorrectly at your local burger joint? I get the same grief and attitude there that you seem to get at your bank, only difference is the bank doesn’t have the opportunity to spit in your sandwich. Good luck, and remember the old saying….”you’ll catch more flies with honey”. Go introduce yourself to your banker. Say hello every time you make a deposit and remember them during the Holidays. I guarantee they will remember you.

I’ve banked with 5/3 for about 20-ish years. Frankly, I’m not convinced there are many banks out there that will treat you much differently. I have been frustrated with the overdraft charges at times – yes, I’ve had my fair share of them over the years. Some times they’ve been forgiven, sometimes not. I have endured similar problems with a simple change of address – they do seem pretty incompetent when it comes to basic admin operations.

12 years ago, a branch assistant manager actually explained to me the difference between using my Jeannie card as a debit vs credit card, and advised me to use as a credit card – to avoid the nickel/dime charges I would get from 5/3 for using my debit card more than a couple of times a month. Ever since, I am amazed at the number of people I see in the checkout line who pull out their Jeannie card, swipe it, and proceed to enter their PIN. I figure they must have lots and lots of money…

Luckily, I only finance cars through a couple of credit unions – mostly Teachers – and have by and large good experiences. I only have had one or two loans with any bank in the last 30 some years, the last of which was about 20 years ago, and was not a good experience then – and was not with 5/3.

All in all, for me, 5/3 has been acceptable. Not exceptionally good, not exceptionally bad.

I have been a 5/3 customer for a few years. I’ve had a couple of issues with them, but have been able to work them out. I’d like to share some advice from my experience. 1. Deal with your local branch as much as possible. You are much more likely to get a positive resolution when you are dealing with someone face-to-face, especially when that person recognizes you as a regular customer. 2. Be careful when applying for overdraft protection or a credit card with them. If you don’t qualify for a true 5/3 card, they will refer you to another company. The credit card that comes will still say 5/3 on it, even though it is not through 5/3. 3. Fifth Third offers online banking. USE IT! You can monitor the activity in your account on a daily basis. You can even get email alerts when your balance drops below a certain point. 4. If you have checking with them, open a savings account as well. If you are ever in overdraft, they will pull the money from your savings account to cover & will charge you a reduced fee.

On one occasion, they did charge me an overdraft fee, even though a deposit had posted BEFORE the debits. I called my local branch & they credited the fee back to my account.

And to Carol (and anyone else), who is making payments on a totaled vehicle, insurance only covers the retail value of the car. If you owe more than that, you have to pay the balance. Lesson- check the blue book value (at your bank or at http://www.kbb.com) before purchasing a vehicle. If you buy new, get gap insurance that covers you in this situation.

One more thing. If you’re having trouble with your payments being posted late, send them certified mail so that someone at the bank has to sign for them. Then you’ll get the little card back & have proof of when the payment arrived. Or make payments online.

Have been a customer for several years at 5/3. This bank is in a small town in indiana. The people that are running it are all about them and there friends that work there. The bank manager is friends with his boss two other people that work there were in each others weddings and they get up out of there chairs to help you only if they cant find someone else to do it. This bank sucks and i hope some one else takes it over but get rid of the people working in there. we are a farm community and they pretty much have quite helping the farmers with any loans. Big Big Big mistake. Dont bank with 5/3 not a good bank.I could tell alot of stories but not worth the time. Just dont bank with 5/3

It was exp;ained to me that banks give you ‘ a line of credit’ and charge for it calling it an overdraft – or in my case i deposited and had funds available, then charge fees. Totally unfair. I had been a teller for many years n fought the system inside. A family member works there now and they are doing cutbacks and sum jobs r in jeopardy. Maybe they r not stable after all? All others who r happy wit dat bank please stay there so u wont take up room in line at my fabulous bank.

On two occasions they really put the screws to me the same way as others, over overdrafts! This case? They waited a week to mail the notice (due to an unfortunate 3 hour overlap in deposit/draft). Every bank I ever dealt with would call as a courtesy policy, in 40+ years of banking I’ve only had 4 O’drafts you’d think that I was a crook the way they talked to me. I’m getting too old for this world. I miss the old home town banks. P.s…. And we’re supposed to bail these lizzards out.

Forget these people trying to defend Fifth Third Bank, saying we are the problem. They are the worst I ever had to deal with. My mortgage was transfered to them, from that point on I have been having problems. They find ways to charge fees that I never had before they took over my mortgage. They have retards in their credit department and their customer service can care less about anything you want to know. If you can, NEVER use Fifth Third Bank for anything. I am looking at contacting our new government to go after this bank. They need to be investigated and fixed or closed. They are doing well because they rip off so many people that do not fight them, or even know they are getting screwed.

My husband and I have a mtg and an installment loan through this horrible institution. We have had nothing but headaches for the last 2yrs. On an almost monthly basis, after their numerous harrassing phone calls, we have to prove to them that we HAVE made our payments on time, and also fight to have them take back late charges. It’s to the point we are seriously considering talking to a lawyer because as far as we are concerned we ARE doing our part, and it boils down to harrassment on their part. I wouldn’t wish this company on my worst enemy.

I just think it very interesting that the few that are defending 5th 3rd, happen to be posting in groups for the most part. Sounds like one or two people tops posting many posts with different names.

Also for those that have had a problem with 5th 3rd, your arguments are legit, whether or not you (and I’m not saying you have) missed payments now and then, the way that the bank is going about it is ridiculous and they are extremely rude in the process.

But those defending 5th 3rd, seem to be getting rude on the site as well. There is no need to attempt to put us down, when we have done nothing to you. Unless of course, you are 5th 3rd representatives, in which case, get as rude as you want, because it verifies our claims.

One more thing… Not everyone posting on sites complaining about 5th 3rd banks are morons. To make claims that we are all dumb, stupid, or otherwise mentally incapacitated, and/or have no financial willpower, is either naive and arrogant, or dumb, stupid, or otherwise mentally handicapped, themselves. Logically speaking, if there are this many people complaining about the same bank on many different services, including people that HAVE money and cannot be accused of living paycheck to paycheck, chances are there is a problem. This problem coming from so many different sources regarding so many different services, cannot logically or rightfully be blamed on the consumer (otherwise known as victim).

Overall, those blindly defending 5th 3rd Bank (not those who are real people and haven’t had a problem with 5th 3rd), could you please take your ignorance and condescending attitude, and find a place to put it where it will not offend anyone.

I had a truck leased thru 5/3 rd for three years, when my lease was up, I purchased my truck, thru payments. My wife recently was not working, causing our income to drop buy ALOT. So me being an American, started paying off loans. Two other banks that I had installment loans thru, I paid off, and it was very easy. When I went to 5/3rd in Northwood, they were $150.00 higher then my calculations. The guy I talked , after much discussion said he would do some checking, and get back to me that day. As of today I have not heard from him. So ater a week, I went to another branch in Perrysburg. They were very helpful, but later the next day the young lady called me and said, her regional mgr. checked, and they can’t wave the $150.00 EARLY PAYOFF FEE, because they would lose money on the deal. NO OTHER BANK THAT I PAID OFF EARLY, CHARGED ME A EARLY PAYOFF FEE!!!. I would move to Mexico or worst yet to FRANCE before ever going to 5/3rd for another DIME.

This is Steve from post 136 again.

My experience with 5th 3rd consisted of the following:

I was with them for 8 months. I was in the Marine Corps at the time on temporary assignment to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. I kept my account in the green the entire time I had the account. When my temporary orders expired and I had to return to Camp Pendleton, CA, I closed my account due to the fact that I prefer having a local bank in case I need to talk to someone in person. In order to close an account, your account must be at $0.00. It was. This was back in 2005. I had no issues for quite a while. I wound up deploying in 2006 to Iraq. When I returned from Iraq and got out of the Marine Corps, I had a letter from 5th 3rd stating I owed 179.16, a letter from 5th 3rd stating my account had been turned over to a collection agency, and a letter from ChexSystems stating I had 30 days to challenge the debt or they would assume it was legitimate. Those letters had arrived 3 or 4 months before I laid eyes on them. Needless to say, I was a bit perturbed.

I contacted 5th 3rd, and they informed me that they couldn’t access my account and I needed to call the head office. When I called the head office, they said I needed to call ChexSystems to get the issue resolved because “it was out of their hands” . When I called ChexSystems, I was already slightly annoyed, but I sat there and talked with them for quite a while without losing my cool. I was told at that time, that they would send me paperwork I needed to dispute the claim. I never received it. I didn’t need to worry about getting it cleared up for a while, due to the fact that I didn’t need a new checking account. I am now in need of a checking account, so 3 weeks ago, I called ChexSystems, who told me they have nothing to do with clearing up the mess. They said that all they do is clear my name in their system once 5th 3rd tells them it’s settled. More than a bit confused, I call 5th 3rd. They then inform me that I need to call Arrow Financial, because they are the collections agency holding my account. When I called Arrow Financial, I go through 3 different numbers trying to talk to someone. When I finally do reach a person, they inform me I need to talk to someone at Financial Managament Services because they are the ones holding my account. After I finally get through to a person there, he listens to my story, and begins telling me all about his problems with 5th 3rd in the past, that tons of people have similar stories, how this shouldn’t have happened, and how to pay for the debt. I told him again that I did not want to pay for a debt that was not my fault due to the fact that my account was at $0.00 when I closed it. He again said it happens all the time but there was nothing he could do. He told me I would have to fill out the paperwork to dispute it. The problem is, it would take months to dispute, and I have a job that pays via direct deposit ONLY. Since I don’t have an account and can’t get one without paying them, they have me trapped. And one thing about collections and such, is that you can dispute it while it is a debt. It is tons harder to dispute when you paid it. Paying it is kind of like admitting it was your debt.

Anyway, I paid it, just to find out that it’s going to take a month to get through the systems of Financial Management Systems and Arrow Financial, before it gets to 5th 3rd. Then 5th 3rd has to tell ChexSystems that it is paid before they will clear my name from the black list. I have no faith whatsoever in 5th 3rd, so this whole idea of hoping my name gets cleared is driving me nuts. There will be at least one paycheck that will be delayed a month because of their BS. Now, I dont know about any else on here, but in the current state of the economy, the majority of America cannot afford to be without a paycheck for a month.

I guess that about covers my horror story. $180.00 gone because of their greed.

FIfth third Bank is the worst relationship I have had in my 42 years of doing business with car lenders. They harassed us about providing proof of insurance in the 18 months we had the loan. Then when I traded the car in I had fiananced with them they harassed us about the last payment which would be included with the payoff. The payment is late after the 12th and then a late fee is assessed. Do you beleive they started calling before the 12th and even after telling them I traded the car in on the 28th of the previous month and they should get a pay off within the next week the called our home 4 times a day. Can they understand english, maybe not!!!!!!! I am so glad to be out of fifth thrid bank, the reason I traded was to get out from them also. I got a great deal and a better interest rate. AVOID FIFTH THRID BANK AT ANY COST.

Yes, I had the same problem with them saying I wasn’t insured when I was and every month for 5 months I received that letter and had to call them.

i had an overdraft- discovered it on sunday- was at the bank when it opened to make a deposit and settle fees. lady was very nice and said it was all taken care. she even cut half of the fees. i was pleased. well then i check my balance and there is another fee of $100! pissed i call debbie and ask about the fee. she says- well you deposited $300 but only $100 was available in your account so the account overdrafted when they took money from the account

I find it strange that people who are on here claiming they have no problem w/ 5/3 are on a 5/3 bank sucks website. I don’t normally seek out a negative website on something I don’t have a problem with. In regards to the people who are so insistent that we are all idiots who have no idea how to pay our bills, consider this: Our installment loan payment is due on the 20th. It was paid on the 19th (last thursday). Guess what? Saturday morning at about 8:05 our phone starts ringing…..it’s 5/3 bank telling us our payment was late! Even after giving them the reference # on the payment receipt, we are still getting phone calls as of today (march 24) . ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!

I have to agree with an above comment. Everyone should do their homework on the bank they choose to do business with. I work at a financial industry myself and I have to say that in this “fast food” pace world today people are very impatient and don’t want to take the extra time to sit down with a banker and actually discuss what accounts they are getting themselves into. I can count numerous times where people are on their cell phones, talking to each other or telling me they have only five minutes…now work miracles. I find that it is not only the banker’s assistance for the customer that is needed in order to place each customer in the right account, but it is also up to each individual to balance their own checkbook and be responsible for their own overdrafts and accounts. We are adults, not babies. We all can’t be held by our hands and told how to manage our own money. If the money is not there, then you shouldn’t be using it. Simple as that, no matter where you bank.

I’ve had it with this bank. Been a customer for over 25 yrs and run about 1.5 million dollars and about 15 loans through their bank right now. But that is in the process of changing. I am currently moving every account to another bank. Without going into details, I’ve had it with the way they treat me, try to take advantage of me. They charge for every little thing you do. They are in the business of banking so why charge a fee for doing the job you’re in business to do? If customers didn’t come in and do transactions you’d have no business, its like getting paid twice to do the job. They sent me a letter stating my home value had dropped and they were reducing my home equity line, when i called them they told me it was based on a national avg and if i wanted to change it i would have to pay for an appraisal through them (which they didn’t get when they lowered my line). It was obvious all they were after was my appraisal fee. Then, when i decided to just close the acct they charged me a fee to close it, the same amount as an appraisal, so they planned on getting my money coming and going. They are all about taking your money for no service. Heed all the warning, go elsewhere or you’ll truly be sorry.

Some years back, I applied for a home equity loan at Fifth Third. Waited and waited, but never heard from them. Never got a denial, nothing. Finally got a an equity line of credit at another bank and guess who bought that bank; you guessed it Fifth Third. I have checking at two banks and the interest paid on the checking account at Fifth Third is half that of the other bank, even though the amounts on deposit average about the same.

Sooo i have had nothing but problems with 5/3… It is the only bank in my little city so i had to open through them… Well the day i turn 18 i get an offer to open a CC with 0% for 12… So ill take it… I payed it off on my 19th bday… And closed the account. Well 2 months later i get a bill from the cc company saying i owe like 7 dollars. I went to my local branch and payed it and asked them very descriptively if the account was gone. They said yes it is gone now and completly closed. Well i recieve a phone call from a collections agengy asking for all kinds of info and i tell them what is this for. It was fees from my birthday that just kept multiplying and muliplying. I told them straight up that there is no way im paying any amount of money for a CC that i closed more than 6 months ago so i got those fees waved and again they said the account was closed. Well that whole ordeal screwed my credit over and i have to send a letter to someone to get my credit fixed.

just today i get a call from my local branch which is full of nice people saying that my account is over-drawn and i need to call this lady. I call her and she says im over drawn 340 dollars. I start laughing and ask how that is possible. She said when i deposited my check on friday i took out 100 dollars to pay for this tux i had to pick up and i payed my installment loan. When that happened it actually left me with a negative charge that took away from the money that i had in the account because my payroll checks, which are through a major company, are held for “up to one day”… So i put some small charges on the card. All less than 8 dollars thinking i should have an “available balance” of 100 dollars when i deposited my check.. Well all those added up to over 200 dollars in fees.. which just keep mulitplying even on day the bank isn’t open which i find funny. What i dont understand and what boggles my mind is that the money is in the banks hands and lets just say i went over my “avialble balance”, why dock my for going over if the next day the money is there?? Hell hit my with penalties if the payroll check bounces but don’t screw me if the money is there.. OO what else i find funny is i can cash my check fully, get all the money in my hand and then right another deposit slip and deposit all that money into my account no problem.. WEIRD. I don’t knwo why they are like that.. There is no way im paying that money and they have no collateral on me so if it comes down to it they have to hit my credit and i will take a huge hit.. Its to the point in our economy that it seems like the better thing to do…

    Well

  148. We have had a car loan with 5th 3rd for three months and even tho the payments are made on time they call constantly. Every 1&1/2 hours. Please hold for an important call from 5th 3rd. I don’t hold and I won’t take their calls. They add fees and financing til it is absolutely ridiculous. Do NOT deal with thes scum bags at all.

  149. Interesting that I happened on this site! I would never ever do business with this bank after they way they took advantage of my daughter…same as other posts I just read. She had one check which would have overdrawn her account…and several smaller checks…and of course they ran the large check through first which overdrew her account and racked up several overdraft fees for themselves…$250.00! What jerks! That $250.00 would have bought a lot of groceries to feed her kids, but do they care? NO! Another example of screwing over the “little guy” :-(

  150. Regarding my earlier post, after contacting the bank and asking why they didn’t run the smaller checks through first, my daughter was told to “read the by-laws” … “the bank has the right to process checks in whatever order they choose” … and then they offered to withdraw ONE of the overdraft charges…how VERY understanding of them! ;-)

I’ve been a 5/3 customer for eight years (car loan, checking and savings). Our local branches are excellent (central Indiana) and I’ve never had a problem with them at all! Once when we were almost about to incur a fee for not keeping $5.00 minimum in savings, the gal called my husband and we took care of it online. I think they’re great, I mean, as great as a bank can be. I am truly sorry for anyone who has had a bad experience, because I’ve had some go-rounds with other industries- i.e. health insurance, that just wiped me out emotionally with all the run-around. Just thought I’d pipe up! I love my local branches, but then maybe Indiana people are just nicer in general ( ha ha).

    5/3 has ruined my life.

They repossessed my car the night before we were to get a loan to pay it off. They tried to repo my truck and threatened us several times using vulgar language.

After turning in the truck to be done with them once and for all, they hit us with a $400 tire fee–months after the fact. We have been disputing this since 2005 and just last week we received a court summons. Apparently they hired a collection agency to come after us, tacking on fee after fee. Since we disputed it, we’re now being taken to court.

I’m fighting back and not taking this crap!

Perhaps all of us on this comment page should do a class action lawsuit!!!!

I’ve never had much interaction with 5/3 bank until recently. I was a cosigner on my now ex-wife’s vehicle loan. She had moved out of state last year and became delinquent on her account. I never received any notice of this at my address and it obviously hurt my credit score. So this year I go to refinance and my credit score is diving due to my ex-wife’s account being about 80 days delinquent. By the way, my ex received a DUI and totalled the car in January of 09. There was a gap and she still owed 6.5K on the loan after the insurance payoff. I quickly took out a loan from my credit union and payed off the total balance owed on the car. I’ve called them every single day to get this straightened out and have not been able to speak to clear English speaking person as of yet. Very frustrating. Two people over the phone told me the full payoff balance and then said when I go to to a local branch and pay off the loan amount to call them with the transaction #. I went to the local branch, they told me the full payoff balance, and I pay it in full. I called back with the transaction # and they say there’s also a late fee of $100.40. Nobody, after speaking to several people with 5/3, ever told me anything about any late fees due. Also since I’m the cosigner they never have my information, so every time I call I have to give them all my information over again, about 10 times already. Don’t they put this into their records. They obviously have my ssn because they report this account to the credit bureaus. I know I’ll never do any business with 5/3 because their customer service, in my experience, is very poor, obviously outsourced overseas, and you get stuck on the merry-go-round of call this department and then call the department you just called. Who has the time for this? What a damn headache.

Merchants beware! Fifth Thirds charge card approvals make be useless! They gave us absolute approval many times over for three overseas sales. They assured us that, if we had their approvals, the money could not be retrieved. When there was a question, we provided non-refutable paper trails on the sales including proof of delivery. Then, without notice, they took over $10,000 from our account! Then they claimed that they never gave approval! Merchants beware! Don’t process through Fifth Third Bank!!! As hard as we’re trying, we feel the money is lost causing our business an almost terminal hardship!

I live near a small town that has about 4 banks and 3 credit unions. I have been dealing with 5th 3rd since they tool over 2 banks in the same town. They then had to sell one??? I hate the way I am treated. Their bank is the only one you cannot call direct. Instead I get a central phone dispatch tningy and have to pick a option #3 to get my bank. They 90% of the time will not answer and it takes several calls to reach them. I am saying goodbye to that bank ver shortly after reading more about 5th/3rd banks.

I’ve been with 5/3 for almost 10 years. I got my mortgage through them and the transaction went smoothly. I hate this bank now. They are so money hungry and selfish, they dont care anything about their customers like they use to. Most employees there I talk to are so rude and snotty. They entered a deposit when I was there in person, got my transaction receipt and everything. A few days later I get a letter in the mail, saying that I have all these overdraft fees. (Make a long story short, 1of the idiots didnt complete the process). So I had to get in my car, drive over there with my new born baby at the time and show them my receipt. The chick had attitude with me because of their mix up. She didnt even apologize. They need to screen their employees more also. This bank is in Louisville, KY

I have also had HORRIBLE experiences with 5th TURD bank. I only joined this bank because the company I paid my rent through only excepted payments at this bank. I can recall a time they called me on my cell to tell me that they were putting a hold on my account because I had items posted to come through and I did not have enough funds to cover them. However, I had direct deposit and my check was going to be deposited the following day, so what was the problem. I have also gone in and had some funds refunded back into my account because of their mistakes. I have been dealing with 5th TURD for 8 long years and I am also closing my account on Monday, 6/29/09. I travel out of town a lot, down south, and their are no 5th TURD banks down that way so their for I am left having to travel with a lump sum of money or hit with an ATM fee for retrieving MY money out of the bank. Also, I ordered a bank card from them over the phone and after 7 business days I went inside the bank for the teller to tell me that it has been sent out to give it another day or so. So, I waited another 5 business and returned to the bank for another teller to tell me that the card had been canceled, would you like for me to reorder it. I was like what the hell. So, I had to wait another 7 days on a card that I should of gotten weeks ago. I could go on and on but I’ll let others share their thoughts of 5th TURD. TWO THUMBS DOWN TO 5TH THURD

Fifth Third Bank keeps calling and calling for Janet L. Foster who either had our phone number before or gave a false phone number. It’s always a machine asking us to enter her pin number and we can’t get a real person on the phone. We have called headquarters many times and they just play dumb. We are now in the process of filing a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General to get them to stop. We have never been inside a Fifth Third building let alone done business with them.

I opened a credit card acct with 5/3nat zero interest for 1 year. I never received a bill for the first payment. By chance I called to ask about this and found out the next day was the due date! I are very careful with my mail and my bills and know that they did not send me a bill. I will be very carefull with this account and will close it as soon as I am able! Also I can’t believe that they do not accept on line payments seems that they want you to be late!
